When Your Goals No Longer Make Sense: A Gentle Mid-Year Reset Guide

What’s changed in our family plans, and how that impacted our 2025 goals
Why shifting your goals mid-year isn’t a failure, it’s proof of growth
A practical mid-year reset checklist to help you feel reconnected and clear again
If I’m being honest, sometimes the goals I set in January don’t always make sense by June.
Maybe life changed, your priorities shifted, or you’re simply not the same person who made your vision board at the start of the year. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’re growing.
That’s exactly where I found myself this spring. I was looking at my 2025 vision board and felt completely disconnected. So instead of forcing myself to stick to goals that no longer fit, I gave myself permission to do a mid-year reset.
Here’s exactly how I realigned my goals (and mindset) halfway through the year—and how you can too.
01. Revisit Your Original Vision
Before you scrap your goals altogether, take a moment to revisit them. I pulled out my 2025 vision board and read over the goals I set back in November 2024. Some of them still made sense, but others felt like they belonged to a different version of me.
✨ Ask yourself:
Why did I set these goals in the first place?
Does that version of me still exist, or have I evolved?
02. Get Honest About What’s Changed
This spring, my husband Adam and I had a heart-to-heart about our next season of life. We realized our biggest priority isn’t owning a summer mountain cabin right now—it’s moving to a family-friendly neighborhood where our daughter can grow up safely and joyfully.
That clarity led us to shift our financial and lifestyle goals. We hit pause on our cabin dream and started looking for a long-term home here in Florida. We also decided to rent out our current house and begin building our rental property portfolio now instead of “someday.”
✨ Take inventory:
What major shifts have happened in your life this year?
What new dreams are bubbling up?
03. Rewrite the Plan, Not the Purpose
Once we had a new vision, we updated our goals to match. Adam even decided to take on a part-time W-2 job to help with our mortgage plans for the future—something we never would’ve considered a year ago.
We mapped out a 5-year plan with clear timelines and milestones, and honestly? It felt so good to be working toward something together. Not just dreaming, but actually putting structure behind the vision!
✨ Try this:
Assign your revised goals to Q3 or Q4. Break them down by month (July–December) so you know what your focus is each step of the way.
04. Use a Mid-Year Reset Checklist
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. I created a simple checklist to help me walk through the reset process step by step, and it might help you too:
MID-YEAR RESET CHECKLIST
Revisit your original goals & vision board
Reflect on what still aligns and what doesn’t
Visualize the next 6 months—how do you want to feel?
Update your goals based on what matters now
Rebuild your vision board if needed (I used the editable Hustle Sanely Canva template!)
Assign goals to Q3/Q4 and plan monthly check-ins
✨ Bonus tip: Schedule your Q3 planning session before July starts so you go in feeling grounded, not scrambled.
05. Remember: Changing Your Goals Isn’t Quitting
Letting go of a goal doesn’t mean you’re flaky or inconsistent—it means you’re listening. You’re being present. You’re making decisions based on who you are now, not who you were months ago.
Editing your goals to match your life is proof of growth.
Final Thoughts: Your Goals Can Grow With You
If you’re looking at your 2025 goals and feeling like they belong to a stranger, give yourself permission to pivot. You don’t need to wait until January to realign. Mid-year resets can be powerful turning points if you lean in with intention and honesty!
