How to Prepare for a Stress-Free Fall: 5 Things to Do Before the Season Starts

Keep reading this post to learn:

  • 5 simple things you can do now to feel mentally prepared for fall

  • How to plan ahead for the holidays without rushing the season

  • A practical way to make your goals, meals, and routines fit the months ahead

Am I the only one who feels like fall sneaks up on us every single year? 🥲

I know it starts around the same time. I also spend most of July and August wishing the summer heat away, lol. And yet, somehow, fall still manages to catch me off guard.

Maybe it’s because summer has a more whimsical rhythm. Time doesn’t always feel real when the days are longer, and schedules are looser.

Or maybe it’s because Target puts out back-to-school supplies in June and Halloween decorations in July, so my brain genuinely cannot figure out what time of year it is.

Either way, I’m determined to head into fall feeling mentally prepared this year.

Everly is starting preschool in August, and August through November is the busiest season of the year for me at work.

Can you say planner season?! 🍂📔

So, instead of letting the season happen to me and hoping I can keep up, I’m doing these five things before the end of August to create a calmer, more intentional fall.

Here’s what I recommend doing now so you can actually enjoy the season when it arrives:

Step 01: Declutter Your Fall Clothes and Identify the Gaps

First things first: pull out your fall bin or visit the section of your closet you haven’t touched since spring.

Go through each piece and ask:

  • Does it fit?

  • Do I love it?

  • When’s the last time I actually reached for it?

Anything that gets a “no” can go straight into the donation pile.

And while you’re sorting, start a short list of the pieces you would genuinely like to add to your wardrobe this fall!!

But, listen, this is not the time to make a Pinterest-inspired shopping list of every cute fall outfit you have ever seen. The goal is to notice the specific gaps that remain after you declutter.

Maybe you need a solid pair of boots. Maybe you want one cozy sweater that isn’t pilling within an inch of its life.

Knowing what you actually need helps you shop intentionally in September instead of panic-buying in November because you have nothing to wear to the pumpkin patch. You feel me?

Step 02: Create a Holiday Prep Game Plan

I know, I know. It’s not even fall yet, and I’m already talking about the holidays.

But doing a little planning now is one of the easiest ways to make October through December feel sane instead of chaotic. And I promise, this takes way less time than you think.

Start with these 3 things:

Decide on Halloween costumes

Choose and buy costumes while sizes and options are still available. Future you will be very grateful that you aren’t fighting through picked-over racks in October!

Start a holiday gift list and rough budget

Again: you don’t have to buy anything yet. Just create a place to capture gift ideas as they come to you, make a list of the people you want to bless, and decide roughly how much you want to spend.

That way, you aren’t staring at a blank page in December or realizing at the last minute that you forgot someone.

Write a general holiday to-do list

Think about:

  • Holiday cards

  • Traditions you want to prioritize

  • Decorating

  • Hosting

  • Travel

  • Events and gatherings

Getting those things out of your head and onto paper keeps them from taking up mental space for the next three months.

This isn’t about doing all the holiday things early. It’s about processing the to-dos now so they don’t turn into what feels like an emergency later.

Step 03: Your 2026 Goals and Schedule What’s Left

We’re solidly past the halfway point of the year, which makes this the perfect time to pull out the goals you set in January.

Make a list of everything you haven’t completed yet, then ask yourself:

  • Do I still care about this goal?

  • Does it still make sense for my current season?

Here’s your permission slip: you’re allowed to let a goal go if the answer is no.

In 2022, I found out I was pregnant in April. Halfway through the year, I released most of the goals I had set in January and basically started fresh. My season had changed, my priorities had shifted, and those original goals no longer made sense for my life.

Goals are not a metric of success. They are vehicles that help us move closer to the lives we want to be living.

For every goal you still want to pursue this year, give it a home on your calendar 🗓️

Look at the remaining months of 2026 and decide when each goal will get your attention. Maybe one becomes your focus in September, and another waits until November.

Part of the Hustle Sanely Planning System™ is choosing a monthly focus goal. This helps you make meaningful progress instead of trying to do a tiny bit of every goal all at once and feeling overwhelmed by all of them!

If you use the Hustle Sanely Peacefully Productive Planner®, the pages behind the Quarter 4 tab are perfect for this.

You’ll find three spreads to help you intentionally prepare for the quarter by identifying:

  • Your priorities for the season

  • New routines that will support you

  • The goals and important life events happening each month

Step 04: Update Your Meal-Planning Rotation

Summer meals and fall meals are simply a different vibe.

The lighter, faster meals we love during summer often give way to soups, chili, and cozy crockpot dinners once the weather cools down.

In our house, we like using themed dinner nights because they take some of the guesswork out of meal planning.

Our summer rhythm has looked like this:

  • Monday: Steak-based dish, like steak salad or steak with vegetables

  • Tuesday: Taco Tuesday

  • Wednesday: Easy-peasy dinner, like Just Bare chicken nuggets or Goodles mac and cheese with a vegetable or salad

  • Thursday: Pizza night with friends

  • Friday: Seafood or pasta, depending on our mood

  • Saturday and Sunday: Leftovers or something from our go-to meals list

For fall, I’m thinking:

  • Monday: Soup, chili, or stew

  • Tuesday: Taco Tuesday

  • Wednesday: Salad with a protein, like chicken Caesar salad, steak salad with balsamic, or grilled shrimp salad with lemon vinaigrette

  • Thursday: Pizza night with friends

  • Friday: Sheet-pan dinner with a protein, vegetables, and rice or potatoes

  • Saturday and Sunday: Leftovers or a go-to meal

Notice that I’m not overhauling the entire system. I’m making a few intentional shifts based on what we enjoy eating in the fall and what our schedule will look like.

Your meal plan doesn’t need to be elaborate to be helpful, bestie! A simple rhythm can remove a surprising amount of daily decision fatigue.

Step 05: Create Your Fall Vibe

Okay, this last step is the fun one.

Please don’t skip it because it doesn’t feel “productive” in the traditional sense. Setting the vibe for a season helps it feel intentional instead of like something that is just happening to you.

And you know we’re all about romanticizing our lives around here!

Try these three simple ideas:

Make a fall bucket list

This doesn’t need to be long. Choose a few things you want to prioritize from September through November so you can feel present for the season.

Maybe you want to:

  • Visit a pumpkin patch

  • Try a new fall recipe

  • Go on a hike

  • Pick apples

  • Host a Halloween party

I recommend choosing two or three things per month that you’re genuinely excited about.

Save a few fall playlists

I personally don’t enjoy making playlists, so I hop over to Spotify and find playlists that already match my vibe, lol.

I also like creating a YouTube playlist with cozy fall ambience videos that we can play on the TV. They’re perfect for setting the mood at home or keeping on in the background while I work.

It is so annoying to search for the right playlist or video when you just want to press play, so save a few favorites ahead of time.

Create a fall Pinterest board

This pairs perfectly with decluttering your wardrobe because now you’re not buying random things. You have a clear sense of the look and feeling you want for the season.

Pin a few:

  • Fall outfit ideas

  • Bucket-list activities

  • Manicure ideas

  • Recipes you want to try

  • Home inspiration

We made a summer version to help us romanticize the season, and it was so fun. Consider this your encouragement to make one for fall, too!.

A Peaceful Fall Starts Before the Season Does

Preparing for fall doesn’t mean rushing through summer or trying to control every detail of the months ahead.

It simply means pausing long enough to think through what you need, what matters to you, and how you want the season to feel.

Your homework is to schedule three hours between now and the end of August to work through these five steps.

And no, it does not have to be one big three-hour block. Break it into smaller pockets of time if that works better for your season.

The goal is not to create a perfect fall. It’s to remove a little mental clutter now so you have more room to enjoy your real life later.
