  • 5 simple steps to stop a spiral before it takes over

In case you didn’t know, there’s a difference between thinking something through… and mentally spiraling 😵‍💫

If you’ve ever:

– Needed outside validation before making a decision
– Replayed something you said over and over
– Convinced yourself you need to overhaul your entire life because everything suddenly feels wrong

You’re not dramatic. You’re spiraling. And your brain isn’t broken.

It’s doing exactly what it was wired to do!

Why We Spiral

Your brain is designed to look for threats. That was helpful when “threat” meant physical danger.

Now? Your brain reacts the same way to uncertainty, awkward conversations, and “what if” thoughts.

When you’re not actively focused on something, your Default Mode Network kicks in. Under stress, it tends to loop negative thoughts.

Your amygdala sounds the alarm.

And cognitive fusion makes your thoughts feel like facts.

That’s why spiraling feels urgent and real, even when logically you know it isn’t.

The goal isn’t to eliminate overthinking forever. The goal is to respond differently!

5 Steps to Stop the Spiral

1. Notice It

You can’t change what you don’t notice.

The moment you think, “Why am I still thinking about this?”

That’s your cue! Observation moves you from being inside the spiral to watching it.

2. Name It

Instead of solving it, label it.

“This is rumination.” “My brain is spiraling.”

Naming the pattern engages the logical part of your brain and lowers emotional intensity.

Remember: you’re not fixing it yet. You’re creating space!

3. Interrupt It

Spirals run on “what if.”

So, we have to ask better questions:

– Is this true right now?
– Is this helpful?
– What can I actually control?

Questions shift your brain from panic to processing.

4. Shift Your Body

Your nervous system and your thoughts are connected.

Try:

– Slow breathing
– A 5-minute walk
– Stepping outside
– Drinking water
– Stretching

Doing so signals safety to your brain!

5. Practice Self-Compassion

Ironically, this is the one most people skip!

While self-criticism fuels spirals, self-compassion calms them!

So, instead of: “Why am I like this?”

Try: “This feels uncomfortable. I can handle it.”

Confidence doesn’t come from never spiraling.

It comes from knowing how to reset.
